I didn't know your friend,Pie, but judging from this site and all the contributions, I wish I did. It's hard to understand why the young die or why someone with a warm heart is taken. Dear Pie: The Return of the King received 11 Oscars, including best picture of the year. IMNSHO, they were awarded with the total work--the trilogy of films--in mind, not just the One. It was a chance for Peter Jackson to show his quality. I await the release of the extended version of Return. Still watching them all for me _and_ for you.

Hi..I don't know if any of you AR people remember me, but a few months ago I wandered over to the site to see if all was still well and running. I saw the link to this site, and was distressed so I checked it out. I'm not exactly sure what happened, but it was obvious he was no longer with us. That of course explained the sudden ceasing of his messages to me (the reality of internet relationships i suppose). A few months prior my husband took his life (you might remember him too, he generally went by Rayn), and Mike had been helping me deal with my grief as best as he could with uplifting messages and emails. I'd like to share a note he sent because it really reflected his generosity, and hopefully will give a little insight into his perspective on life, death, and love... "I am sorry this happened. I will keep you in my prayers. It is hardest to go on living. And please try to remeber that I am your friend and will help you in any way I can. Take comfort in knowing that you have many people who love and care for you. You also have those beautiful babies. Try to be strong for them. That is all I can think to say to you, other than, I love you bunches, if you need to talk you can call me anytime and I can call back. Please do not feel any obligation to me in any way I just want to help if I can. My number is 1-248-478-4393. I hope you get through this babe, and I know that you will. Mike." I'm not sure where to begin. I did not know Pie as long as alot of people did..but the 2 yrs or so that I did know him, he made a strong impression. He always tried to make me feel better when I was down..as I am sure he did to everyone that was around him. I wish we had alot more time with him than we did. My husband (Peter 'Firegod' Bleam) says that Pie was my soulmate and that we are forever connected to one another. We share the same love for Frank Herbert's and Peter Lynch's Dune, for LOTR (and this December 19th at the premiere of The Fellowhip of the Ring, Pie and I will be there--one in body and one in spirit), for ST-all, for Galaxy Quest. Pie is the only person I know who really understands my feelings about science fiction and fantasy as a force in human events. That's why Peter says what he says. His favorite quotation of all: Kirk, at Spock's funeral onboard the Enterprise says, "Of all the souls I ever knew, his was the most _human_." Warp speed, Pie......

Thanks go out to all those who contributed in making this site. I think it serves a great purpose for those who go on without someone who impacted our lives. I've read on this page many words talking of how Mike was a leader and a teacher. I too consider him so. I am a very different person now from what I was when I first attended Adrian and met Mike my freshman year. Without going into great detail, I can say that we not only inspired me, he had a large stake in creating the person I am today. He taught me what it was like to enjuoy life without worrying about what other people thought. Pie was about celebrating individualism, while fostering a sense of family and brotherhood. My goal in life was to have an impact on others, so that they may be better people. Mike did just that in the 34 years that we had him. If I could have half that kind of impact, I will consider myself successful in my life's goal. Love and Respect...

Thank you Brother Gwinn for the phone call to tell me...to invite me, though regretfully I could only attend in spirit, prayer, and personal reflection. Creation of this website is a wonderful testimony to a man, a leader, and a Brother for life. I have no doubt that the memories and visual momentos to be offered here will grow by leaps and bounds, helping us to appreciate him, and hopefully each other, that much more. I remember Pie having a wonderful talent for making people laugh, while forcing you to take a look at a new perspective at the same time, and you ended up learning something. He always had a new saying or expression that fostered comraderie. He was a resilient man, even when faced with some difficult personal trials. He transformed personal suffering into victory. He NEVER lost his sense of humor. The pie-isms on this site had me crackin' up, because even though I didn't know all of them, I could hear him sayin'em--Pie had the ability to create his own culture and world, and had you wanting to be a part of it, both in real life and in fiction.--> A 2 minute sampling of him running a gaming campaign as DM in the 2nd floor corner room or lobby of Lowry Hall would amaze you. I loved his imagination! Mike's charisma is unmatched. He IS charisma. He was the one who explained to me the 5 principles inherent in a brotherhood called Beta Lambda Sigma that he and 10 other guys formed the year before in '87. He gave me my nickname, and did so with many others who could not escape the name he would bestow upon you--if Pie gave it to you, you were done and it would stick whether you liked it or not(Just ask "Scooter.":)How many flocked to the blue and silver, followed by the azure and gold, because of Pie's influence? A lot, I can tell you. He made sure projects got finished, even when somebody didn't do their part. BLS & ATO were his child, which he nurtured until adulthood under his watchful eye and ever-present participation and guidance with each new generation of brothers. Today, 14 and a 1/2 years later it lives on as his legacy... And as many of us are learning, myself included, ATO was only one of many larger circles of friends/family that Pie was a part of. I did not know him as well as many of my Michigan-based brothers, but I knew him well enough to love him. I mourn his loss. We shared...We fought...We loved...We lost...but in the end, we both won something greater then in the begining; a brotherhood that we knew would transcend time, age, religion, and major. Mike and I didn't know each other very long but we were on the way to becoming very good friends. Big Daddy Pie reminded me that when I act like a nut it didn't mean I was a nut. It just keeps other people off gaurd. Especially when do something intelligent and imaginative. Pie was both.
